Cerebral review for Black patients (2026)

3.5/5

Cerebral is broad but mid-tier on most axes: faster than Talkspace, slower than Hims Mental, more comprehensive than BetterHelp, but with a track record of regulatory and operational issues that have damaged trust.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Medication + therapy on one platform, similar to Talkspace.
  • Fast intake: most patients have a video session within 48 hours.
  • Prescribes a wider medication menu than Hims, including stimulants in some states (regulatory status changes; verify).
  • Accepts some commercial insurance plans for the therapy track.

Cons

  • Cerebral settled DOJ and DEA investigations in 2022-2024 over controlled-substance prescribing practices; trust has not fully recovered.
  • No explicit Black-clinician filter at intake.
  • Does not accept Medicaid, which is a significant access gap for many Black patients.
  • Customer-service quality has been inconsistent per public reviews; cancellation friction has been a recurring complaint.
  • Therapy is asynchronous-leaning; live sessions cost more than BetterHelp's flat rate.

Pricing and coverage

Pricing
Medication-only $99/mo; medication + therapy $325/mo self-pay. Some insurance plans accepted.
Insurance
Accepts commercial insurance
Notes
Cerebral accepts select commercial insurance plans (Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, BCBS in some states) for the therapy track. Medicaid is not accepted. Insurance coverage varies more by state than Talkspace and is worth verifying before signup.

The honest evaluation

Cerebral expanded fast during the pandemic, then ran into DOJ and DEA investigations over its ADHD-prescribing practices in 2022. The company settled, scaled back its controlled-substance prescribing, and rebuilt clinical processes. As of 2026 the service is operationally functional, but its trust deficit relative to competitors is real. We rank it below Talkspace and BetterHelp for this reason, while still acknowledging that for some patient profiles it is the right service.

Who it fits

Cerebral's medication + therapy combination is genuinely useful when you need both and you do not want to wait 3-5 days for Talkspace to verify your insurance. The downside is cost: at $325/month self-pay for the medication + therapy bundle, you are paying more than Hims Mental Health at $85/month plus BetterHelp at $260-400/month, with worse Black-clinician availability and a more complicated regulatory history.

What to do if you sign up

Verify insurance coverage before the first paid session, not after. Cerebral's website will display "accepts insurance" broadly but plan-by-state coverage varies. The cheapest path is asking your insurance plan whether Cerebral is in-network for behavioral health before completing the intake.

Our methodology

Evaluated against BetterHelp, Talkspace, Hims Mental Health, and Brightside on cost, insurance breadth, medication menu, regulatory track record, and Black-clinician availability. October 2026.
