State Medicaid Navigator

Medicaid, state by state, for Black families

What each state's Medicaid program covers, read from the state itself: whether it has expanded Medicaid, how long coverage lasts after pregnancy, whether it pays for doula care, its income limits, and the ways to apply that the state lists.

Methodology & data sources

Every status, date and income limit on these pages was read on October 26, 2026 from the state Medicaid agency, its rules or manuals, or the CMS-approved state plan amendment, and each page links its sources. Doula status started from our July 2026 study of every state's fee schedule and was re-checked for changes. Income limits are the highest limit a person in each group can qualify under, through Medicaid or CHIP, including the 5% income disregard federal rules apply. Dollar figures use the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines.

Where we could not confirm a fact from the state or CMS, the page says nothing about it rather than guess.

Data refreshed:

If you have Medicaid, the coverage on this page is the route to use first: it costs you nothing and it is what these programs exist for. If you are not covered yet, there is still a free option. Our directory of free and charitable clinics lists centers by state. The option below is self-pay and is not billed to Medicaid. It is here for readers who are between coverage or who prefer to pay out of pocket:
